It is established that between the both of us, Van likes to cook. I cook too, but I prefer to bake and decorate food for presentation more than anything. One of the traditions I maintain annually is to make a turkey-looking item. My mom usually comes home with a cutout from a food magazine of something edible & cute for me to recreate. Thanksgiving 2007 she found a cake idea for my project. This was basically a poundcake (two separately carved spheres – one for the body, one for the head) covered in chocolate frosting, decorated with colored Nila wafer feathers and candy corn multiple roped beard (I tried to make him a prize turkey!). The beak & snood are Jelly Tots (reshapen) and the feet are Swedish fish.
Maybe you call them something different, but this candy (Jelly Tots) is what I used for the beak and snood.

Swedish fish used for the feet
This was one of my favorite projects. It is something I look forward to doing every year. The other side project that I love doing , with my sister, which is creative and sounds deceivingly edible, is constructing no-bake diaper cakes! I’ll have to save that for another post though… but feel free to let me know if you’d like to see some of the stuff we’ve done.

That turkey is the cutest thing EVER! How bit is it, though? The picture makes it look really small, but if you decorated it with Nilla wafers it must be of considerable size.
Diaper cakes? OMG – I can’t wait to read about those!

@Anju
I admit this is the cutest thing I’ve seen in ages. It looks so very… professional. You need to show the other one you did this past year.

@WC And the name Diaper Cakes are misleading as they are not cakes.

Cool Turkey, I thought I was willing to eat questionable things, but diaper cakes sound too gross for even me. Hopefully they are very different from what I am imagining.

Thanks WC
Tom, here, stood about 10-11 inches tall….i’d say a pretty decent size. For a frame of reference, his body (the base sphere) was about the size of a canteloupe. His head was the size of a tangerine.
As for the diaper cakes, they are for baby showers. Instead of having a cake for the mom-to-be, we build a centerpiece that LOOKS like a cake, but made with individually rolled diapers, and other baby-related things. The reason I said they looked “deceptively edible” is because often times people THINK it’s an actual cake. Then mom gets to take it home and use all the things built in for her baby. It’s super cute AND practical!
I’ll find some pix to post.
Thanks again for your compliments!!

Ha! I am guessing they most likely ARE different that what you are thinking. They aren’t edible. They are decorative – for babyshowers in lieu of a real cake (they are safer for mom to avoid sugar related complications like gestational diabetes and such that you might not know about). I will find some pix of stuff we have created and post them. Have a good one!

@ Van:
Thanks sweet-love. I asked your mom to send pix of the other one I did this year since we didn’t take a pic.
