Good Ole Spaghetti and Meatballs
Posted in Italian, Main Course, Pasta on January 4th, 2010 by Van SantosI was asked to make Spaghetti and Meatballs so I thought, hey, why not. Never did that before now seems like a good time to expand the old recipe book. To start, I used the sauce recipe that I used in the Kitchen Scrap Lasagna (I mean, why re-intent the wheel on that one) and focused on the meatballs.
Here is what I used:
1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
1 egg, beaten
1 tbsp butter, melted
1/2 cup Italian Bread Crumbs
1/4 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
1 Green Onion, chopped
1 tsp freshly ground oregano, basil and dill (respectively)
1 tbsp minced garlic
Salt and Pepper to taste
You…
1) Preheat oven to 325
2) Take your ingredients and mix until all items are throughly blended
3) Shape meatballs and place on cookie sheet (like so)
4) Bake for 25 minutes
5) Serve over Spaghetti and top with your sauce of choice
Meatballs are not all that hard to make – it all comes down to having the base recipe and tweaking as you see fit. That said, what are your favorite metaball recipes?
What suggestions do you have that can really make an impressive dish out of something so simple?
Have fun.

I made some Spag & meatballs just last week and you make me want another platter of it. Bravo!
Looks great! The only thing I would suggest is adding a little basil (I love me some basil) and simmering the meatballs in the sauce for a while. It adds a meaty flavor to the sauce and a saucy flavor to the meatballs. Good times.
Love the lined up meatball shot, btw.
I like the meatball photo…nice…
recipe sounds yummy too!
@Peter
Wonderful to hear! BTW, your Creamy Asparagus Soup looks outstanding. I will be making that this weekend.
@Bob
I did have basil, but I think more would be needed. I also like the idea of simmering them in sauce for awhile. Thanks for that one.
@MonicaJane
=)
Of all people, I would have thought you would be suggesting another meatball recipe! I was almost looking forward to it.
contrary to popular belief meatballs are thoroughly american, not italian!
we didn’t eat them in my home and I’ve never seen them in italy.
I do like them though…they’re like little meatloaf balls…I love meatloaf.
to clarify…they are common among italian-americans…and may have been created in that population!
I’m first generation in this country tho and so we ate more like the old country
Looks fantastic! And. . .now I want pasta.
Van, I am a big fan of pasta but I have not made meatballs in years. Usually I just have a meat sauce but this dish you posted looks awfully good.
@Monicajane – I never knew! Goes to show one learns something new every day.
@Eileen – Thanks.
@Tina – I never really had metaballs on a regular basis, let alone actually made them before. If you make a version please do let me know.
I’m doing this one tonight!
LOVE the picture of the Horseradish!!
HAHAHAHA!
Wonderful! Let us know how it goes… and I would follow Bob’s suggestion of putting the meatballs in the sauce before serving.
how funny…got an update in my email…I’m making meatballs as we speak…though they are not Italian at all…they have cinnamon and cayenne and pine nuts and other things…
not sure when they’ll make an appearance on the blog…
I did think of you as I created them…and it is indeed my first time making meatballs!
LOL! How funny is that Monica.
The mix of things listed sounds really – really – good. The pine nuts is really intriguing. Looking forward to it.
Good luck with your 1s time, no doubt it will go well.
Well..they were Fantastic! I dble’ the
“gr8td” (ha! Mag loves that) cheese. I got
8 out of the recipe and cooked them just a
little longer. Easy, delicious and plated
beautifully! I arranged the meatballs in a
smiley face on top of the pasta for the
“Beacon of Positivity”. AKA Ed.
Wonderful! Glad it went well and that you are impressing others with the cooking.
